Asa
Century Club, 12th February
Asa (Asha) is a hotly tipped artist for 2008. After being born in Paris, she moved to Nigeria with her parents but could not stay away from the glittering Parisian lights. At twenty two, she returned to her place of birth. It was here that her life as a musician kicked off.
We headed down to the Century Bar last night for Asas album showcase. What stood out was her refreshing approach to performing.
She wasnt adorned in wannabe star like clothes, hair or make-up. She took to the stage, thanking the audience, dressed simply but radiating an effortless kind of beauty.
She glided through her set, with two backing singers, one of whom accompanied her on guitar. Her voice was soft but powerful, reaching out to the audience at the back of the bar. Her lingering vocals emphasized her obviously political lyrics.
You dont care about my point of view. If I die, another will work for you. So you threat me like a modern slave Mr Jailer.
Although Asa wasnt to my own personal taste, she is undeniably a very talented artist who encompassed everything a musician should.
Her songs are wonderfully crafted and come attached with a slight melancholic vibe but are nevertheless uplifting. As a live performer, Asa excells. Definitely one to see in 2008.
Asas debut, Asa, is out to buy now.
