GIG REVIEW: Stereophonics

Acoustic set Live at The Hospital
Tuesday 19th February 8pm

By Adam Walker

Q Magazine’s bi-monthly live showcase was the hot ticket last night, as the Stereophonics played an intimate and live acoustic set deep in the glamorous basement of hip member’s club, The Hospital.

An invite-only audience, made up of competition winners, club members and industry big wigs filled the small studio as a collective buzz loomed in the air. It wasn’t long before Kelly and Co made their way onto the stage; dressed in his rock-star suit of leather jacket, black shades and large glass of claret, he introduced his band as if they were playing down his local. Being used to the surrounds of a large scale stadium, the ‘Phonics seemed exposed and vulnerable – even prefacing the set with apologies of playing acoustic. They needn’t have. Kelly’s raw vocals have never sounded finer; from latest single, 'It Means Nothing' through to Kelly’s solo stint on 'Maybe Tomorrow'.

stereo1.jpgHighlight was 'Dakota', usually a rock-heavy, electronically amplified-fest, the acoustic strings gave this a whole new dimension and only further proved the flexibility of their sounds.

Playing a mix of back catalogue and tracks from their new album, 'Push the Pin', they soared through melodies reminiscent of early ‘Stones. Just as well, with the encore inviting Ronnie Wood on stage to strum 'Don’t Let Me Down'. Finally relaxing into their set, the audience gave more back from a decidedly lukewarm reception but it was too little, too late as the last chord echoed through the ears of the achingly cool crowd.

The gig was fantastic for the real fans that were there. I was right at the front and everyone was singing. The only part of the crowd that wasn't bothered were the one's at the back that you could hear talking all the time. For me and many other fans it was the best night ever.
