AMY MAY
Right Right Now
Charming Records/itunesReview by Peter Coulston
I was fortunate enough to catch a set by this talented young lady this week at Jrink on Frith Street in Soho, where she performed many of the songs on this album with her acoustic guitar. It was a commendable performance, and this is a commendable album. There is a mix of country rock, well crafted ballads and songs that mix the two.
The opener, Everything, is upbeat and catchy and is followed the folky, rockier Déjà Vu, both of which she performed on Monday. They both have great hooks, as do all of her songs, along with sound lyrics which benefit from her clear and passionate vocals. She has bass and drums added on this album, but it is still very much Amys record, with her covering guitar and keyboards effectively and writing all the songs. Talking of songs, there are no bad ones here, but I loved Real, Stormchaser and Off By Heart in the ballad category. If you like things a little rocky, try Between The Lines and the funky, bass driven Told Me So. This is a good album for your collection if you want to sit back and listen to good songs, well performed by a singer/songwriter who has a great future. If you listen, you will enjoy.
