Duffy 'Mercy'
Review by Paul Beevers
Of the current crop of young British female singers seemingly in thrall to Motown, Bacharach, Spector et al, none look more destined for stardom than Duffy. Just 23 years old and hailing from north Wales, with a voice, tunes and looks to die for its hard to see how she can fail.
For the uninitiated, hear Mercy for the first time and youll be convinced its a 60s soul classic thats somehow evaded you completely. Its there in the simple yet warm production, groovy Hammond organ and Yeah Yeah Yeahs running through the chorus. In fact its utterly derivative without so much as a nod to anything thats happened in music for at least 35 years. No matter. Whether flat on your back or ready to cut some dancefloor shapes, this record is an absolute joy.
