Review by Katie Spain
As promised in my column last week, here is the review of Karim Fanous current album, Stir Crazy, which shows off his rock credentials and his band. This album is a perfect showcase for his abilities as both a songwriter and singer, and has all the excitement and spontaneity of his live performances. All the songs are written by Karim and have well structured lyrics and catchy hooks which, for the most part, rock in one form or another. The opening track, Thin Bits, along with So Long Jenny J, Ship Is Sinking and the title track are upbeat and catchy while On Top Of The World and Where Has Your Light Gone have a driving intensity to them with good use of the rhythm section. Easy Come, Easy Go, a regular concert favourite, is here in a slightly jazzier, slower version, Cliches and Candlelight is a bit fifties rock ballad and there are a couple of very nice acoustic ballads to balance things out. Another concert favourite, Perfume is here and is inspired by the book of the same name. Karim is also a big AC/DC fan and there is a muted reference to them in this song; see if you can spot it. In order to spot it, you will, of course, need to listen to the album, a course of action that I strongly recommend. A listen to the samples on myspace will convince you that this album is worth having, and that Karim will be very big, very soon.
