David Garrett

Are you sick of the Indie scene – boys and girls fighting to be cooler than each other and trying to find a jean with a leg thinner than a pair of tights?

Are you sick of Pop music and the rubbish that comes with it: X Factor, Pop Idol, Make me a Singer - or whatever those soul-sucking programmes are called.

Are you sick of the current music scene in general? Well, why not try something a little different in the shape of David Garrett.

David Garrett has already been dubbed the David Beckham of the violin (uh, we can’t quite picture Becks with a violin with his ‘Victoria, do I just kick it or what?’ face) and not just for his looks. He is a dedicated and passionate musician who has been working very hard on his career since he was nine-years-old and has been performing publicly since the age of ten.

Unusually for a violinist many of his fans are still at school and show an unprecedented level of enthusiasm at his concerts. Onstage David exudes charisma and showmanship, performing a mesmerising version of ‘Duelling Banjos’ (from the movie Deliverance) as a guitar duet, ‘Duelling Strings’, and his energetic show stopper, the ‘Gypsy Dance’ by Csárdás. His rendition of Flight of the ‘Bumble Bee’ has to be seen to be believed.

His debut album for Universal Music ‘Virtuoso’ reflects the tastes of a 26-year-old who is clearly in love with melodies, no matter what musical genre they come from. Tracks include his own virtuoso interpretations of popular classics ‘Carmen’, ‘Paganini’, as well as romantic film themes, Morricone’s ‘La Califfa’, Bernstein’s ‘Somewhere’, and, as he considers himself one of the MTV generation, has created a brilliant symphonic reworking of the metal masters, Metallica’s ‘Nothing Else Matters’.

We have some signed copies of David Garrett’s new album, Virtuoso, up for grabs.

Give your taste buds a whirl and try out something a little more refined. To enter our competition, please answer the following question.

How old was David Garrett when he first started playing the violin?

A)Age 6
B)Age 9
C)Age 15
