Black Kids
Hammersmith Apollo, Monday 10th March
Review by Zarina Raja
Black Kids are slowly filtering their way into the consciousness of music lovers. If you havent heard of them yet, you soon will. They are an Indie/Pop band from Florida who are currently impressing the music heavies with their chirpy single Im Not Going To Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You.
Last night, they supported Kate Nash at the Hammersmith Apollo. The early slot is usually a hard one to fill, but when youre in a room full of excited teenagers high on fizzy drinks and Malteasers (yep, its the first gig I have been to where they were selling sweets - cinema style) its not hard to work them up into a sugar-fuelled frenzy. Although a lot of people obviously hadnt heard of them before, this didnt cease the crowd from bobbing about and waving their arms up and down to most of their songs.
The set was energetic and fun; Black Kids spun out an eclectic mix of danceable songs that were played furiously. Their set exuded colourful Pop undertones and were the perfect way to warm up the crowd before Kate Nash.
Although the set was enjoyable, it wasnt ground breaking, possibly due to the fact that it was early in the night and everyone was only really interested in seeing Kate. The Hammersmith Apollo seemed like too big a venue to captivate the Black Kids audience but they managed to give it a pretty good shot.
