Bestival Reunion Party
Featuring: Buraka Som Sistema
and Ebony Bones
Fabric
Review by Andy Hirst
Fabric Live; always a heady mix of intoxicating musical varieties, this time along with the usual dose of brain melting drum and bass, Rob Da Bank was hosting the main room with a Bestival reunion party featuring some of the acts that performed at this summers festival as well as a DJ set from the man himself.
Ebony Bones was one of the first live bands to take the stage and if the audience didnt look sufficiently glamorous for a Friday night there was no disputing the effort made on stage; sassy outfits and garish makeup whilst not the only captivating feature of her performance certainly added to it. And unfortunately when you are only one out of 3 rooms worth of entertainment, as is the case at Fabric, ensuring that you are captivating enough can be a hard thing in competitive circumstances such as these and as such a rather patchy crowd came and went with regularity not usually reserved for live bands. The performance itself was very entertaining, disco beats, funky bass lines and rowdy vibrant vocals are permeated by interesting little breaks to keep the audience on their toes. At times the upbeat disco frolics are interrupted with a more dark and sinister sound but this tends to only last long enough to drop back into the dance rhythms, big things are predicted of this act and after this performance I see no need to disagree, big hooks and intelligent song progressions give this act a dynamic sometimes missing from dance music, if you would even want to categorize this in such a way.
Buraka Som Sistema, a Portuguese break beat outfit were up shortly after and launched a headlong attack on the audience who seemed to be warming up a little more. I had not been to Bestival and as the group are relatively unknown aside from a recent collaboration with MIA the performance was the first of theirs I had witnessed and I was certainly impressed by the sheer volume of energy they created. Club friendly beats with throbbing bass lines and aggressive Latin lyrics come pouring out recently whilst the MCs keep the crowd fully entertained. Whilst maintaining a slight element of their Mediterranean rhythmic background there is also something of a UK grime sound to them with some rather edgy off beat drums and grimy synth sounds, certainly a sound fitting to the fabric live stage.
In conclusion this was certainly an interesting retrospective look at Bestival 2007 and a very successful advert for Bestival 08.
