Crises Consequences
Roundhouse, Camden.
Sunday 2nd March
Review by Holly Groom
Consequences Live saw members of a superband consisting of Graham Coxon, New Young Pony Club, The Smiths' Andy Rourke, Supergrass, Paul Weller and the Noisettes perform an exclusive rendition of a specially created track, alongside their own material, to raise money for the homelessness charity Crisis.
The event was organised by serial rock-wife Pearl Lowe, who also performed with her husband, Supergrass drummer, Danny Goffey.
The all-day gig, at Camden's Roundhouse saw members of the Consequences 'superband', collaborating live for the first and only time. Each musician contributed part of the song without knowing what was going before or coming after their section. The result was an impressive, Phil Spector-esque 'wall of sound' (minus the blatant, gun-toting insanity) in which all the musicians, professional or otherwise, shared equal importance on the track.
The gig itself had something of a festival feel about it - bad weather, overpriced beer and a very eclectic mix of performances. During the day punters wandered in and out of the main area and the outside terrace getting ironically wasted at an event sponsored by Drinkaware (who attempted to make us all think more about alcohol being the route of all evil or something.)
Maybe Drinkaware need to think harder about picking the right audience warning; a steaming mass of Paul Weller fans about the perils of drink on a lazy, boozy, Sunday afternoon was never going to have the lasting effect they might have hoped for. Thankfully, we were all given wristbands on entry enabling us to re-enter the venue all day - it didn't take long until the wise among us were outside sipping supermarket lagers between bands.
In many ways the Roundhouse's bar prices were the most effective deterrent for those who chose to stay and buy their poison inside - if nothing else a lot of people left the venue at the end of the night very much more aware of the monetary cost of alcohol misuse...
Throughout the day Crisis interspersed live acts with short films showing their ongoing and innovative work with homeless people, but by far the most convincing evidence of their success was the highly professional and, frankly brilliant, group consisting of formerly homeless, Crisis patrons who took to the stage at 4pm. It was in the nature of the day that they were followed by a very low-key Graham Coxon playing a set of down-beat, acoustic songs. Great concern was taken to ensure that, while big names were present (the prevalence of Fred Perry shirts and greying mod haircuts suggested that most people had come to see one man and one man alone), Crisis were, rightly, relentless in conveying their message that those in need were as deserving of attention as anybody else.
The show itself was a great success with Paul Weller and Supergrass supplying fantastic performances and the Crisis single revealed to be a high energy masterpiece that was just about worth an entire day's wait.
All in all, Crisis should be feeling pretty smug about putting on a musically and morally impressive mini-festival. That said, after a ten hour drink and music binge, I personally felt Drinkaware needed to rethink the manner in which they run their own campaign...

Daisy Lowe's friends were really nice very down to earth. Supergrass rocked and I got really drunk- it was like a mini indoor festival. Only downer for me was that some bitch put 23 pieces of chewing gum in my girlfriends hair during Weller. I spent the rest of the time trying to get the Roundhouse management to sort it out, they held the girl in question but they were too posh to give a damn and let her go!
