Robots in Disguise
Supporting Gary Numan
Indigo Arena, O2, Saturday 15th March
Robots in Disguise never fail to disappoint; not fazed by the stiff, ageing Gary Numan fans, Dee Plume and Sue Denim jammed their way through the early slot as if they were performing to their regular crowd.
Although looking small on the vast stage, their set was anything but undersized. They rolled through old Robot classics like 'Turn it Up' and 'DJs Got a Gun' and thundered their way through some newer songs like The Sex Has Made Me Stupid and Berlin which are from their most recent album Were in the Music Biz.
Saturday night saw half an hour of perfected RID songs. The usual larking about on stage was absent but it was obvious that they were still having a damn good time. Their presence dominated the venue and the crowd seemed to be enjoying it, despite the lack of dancing that a normal RID gig was entail. This, however, had nothing to do with their set; most of their gigs are drenched in girls with heavy fringes and sparkly trinkets, so it was understandable that the middle-aged, male dominant audience was a little less animated.
They did manage to grab a couple of oohh oohhs from various audience members and certainly impressed the Numan fans with a real-life robot duo who, clad in their silvery home-made robot costumes, pulled various robotic shapes along side Dee and Sue.
It was certainly a different crowd for the Robots to perform to but it went down well.
