GIG REVIEW: Tina Dico

The Union Chapel

Review by Katie Spain

"It feels weird being marinated
in a church..."

Before heading to the Union Chapel for a night of entertainment courtesy of Tina Dico, I hot foot it to Koko to interview American Hip-Hop gals ‘Northern State’. Out the front of the venue, a young crowd braves the freezing cold with blankets and Doritos. Ah, the youth of today.

It is with relief that we finally approach North London’s Union Chapel and find a swift and warm entry. As venues go, this is one of the more character-packed out there. As a rule, I don’t generally visit churches unless there’s a marriage in the diary. They make me feel nervous and strangely oppressed. This church however, packs more ‘wow’ than anything else. The dark interior and gorgeous architecture frames a small stage adorned with guitars and a mic. It’s acoustic heaven (pun intended).

The first slice of the evening is taken up in the bar. There’s no alcohol allowed in the parish but the pre-set beverage experience is a good one as the support acts are played through speakers for all to hear. No ones to miss out on the true live music vibe, we soon take our place in a pew.

The next hour with Danish extraordinaire Tina Dico is a concert worthy of God himself. If he’s watching (and I’m sure he is), he’d agree that this little blonde Dane is worthy of recognition and the sooner the better. Her emotion packed voice fills the Union Chapel to its very epicentre. If there are mouse holes here, the rodents are getting a treat. Tina takes us on a journey through the new songs from her album ‘Count To Ten’ with a few oldies thrown in for good measure. She has a lot of devoted followers in the crowd; they know every word.

Tonight, Tina forgoes the strings and piano heard on her album and performs solo. It works. From the soul-baring melodic waves of ‘Sacre Coeur’, to the vocal heights hit during ‘Quarter To Forever’ and into the mesmerising chords of ‘Cruel To The Sensitive Kind’ we are entranced. The ocean-like rip within Miss Dico grabs us, sucks us under and doesn’t release her grip until the final note disappears into the floorboards.

We interviewed the Aarhus born recently and she’s as deep as she looks. The musical road hasn’t been an easy one, the loneliness of life on the road takes its toll and friends are hard to come by. Where there’s hurt however, there’s often creative inspiration and every word that leaves her mouth is drenched in emotion. When her heart aches, we feel it too. Tina Dico makes a room full of people fall in love with her at the simple drop of a note.

Still, serene and confident, Tina eases us through one of the most mesmerising gigs I’ve seen in a long time. “Take your time” indeed Tina… the later this ends, the better.

If only all Church experiences were like this. Stand up people, get off your modern music encrusted buttocks and take notice of this amazing talent. There’s a buzz surrounding UK female artists right now but the likes of Adele, Duffy and Kate Nash’s will turn to dust when Tina Dico breaks through the border. If there’s one artist you need to check out today, it’s this one. Just ask God…

Love the site and love Tina! Thought you might be interested in one of my new favorite artists, AM. Found him on Tina’s myspace page. They were just on tour together in Germany and did a duet together of The Beatles "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from his album, Side By Side. He's next to impossible to Google though?? Blame it on his name... Ha. Check him out at amsounds.com or myspace.com/amsounds.

Great words on Tina, she is a favorite of mine! Saw the post above on, I had heard her duet with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and I wasn't sure who she was singing with. Love that I finally found it was AM! Just added him as a friend on myspace and will look for some songs on iTunes. Thanks for the tip : )
