Review by Karen McCandless
In case you havent heard of Yoav, let me give you a bit of a background. Yoav is an Israeli born and Cape Town raised singer/songwriter. His music is a unique blend of hip-hop and electronica but with a twist- Yoav makes all of the sounds on his guitar or with his voice.
This venue would have been intimidating for many much more experienced musicians due to the intimacy and the proximity to the audience, but Yoav wowed everyone with his amazing vocal and musical talent (and proved to be a hit with the ladies as well!) Barefoot so he could press the pedals and using his toes to produce more sounds, Yoav created some really distinctive beats by hitting his guitar in different places, which produced a very percussive sound. Having been previously described as a one man Timbaland, the best thing about this gig was being able to see everything he was doing and how he was doing it- my appreciation for his talent increased with each song. The performance culminated in his first single Beautiful Lie from debut album Charmed and Strange, which is jam-packed with beautifully crafted tunes and is sure to be racing up the charts when it is released in April.
And all this from a man who was once told by US music executives that his sound was too unique to ever be successful!
