Interview by Katie Spain
When we entered The Roundhouse dressing room, we were expecting tour tales packed with excitement and debauchery from Jimmy Eat Worlds drummer Zach Lind and bass player Rick Burch. Maybe we were too little and female for them, maybe the hair on our arms didnt match the impressive forest sported by Lind, or maybe once youve got as much experience as this lot, it really is all about the music. We covered talk of UK curries, ring tones and a lack of crazy tour stories then turned our attention to the sixth of their studio albums 'Chase The Light'. The mix of questions were based on song titles. We got some very interesting responses...
(Big Casino)
If you won a fortune and could spend it on a piece of kit, what would it be?
Rick (to Zach): Would you get one of those snare drums that are made out of wood that people find at the bottom of the lake?
Zach: Yeah, that would be good! Id buy a bunch of drums. Its kind of hard because I have so many great drums already.
Rick: Yeah, I have some great guitar I have too many.
You can never have too many guitars!
Zach: I would rather spend the money on a cabin in the woods.
Would you like some more drum solos Zach?
Zach: I dont get any but Im OK with that. I dont think I would have anything interesting to do.
Rick: Yeah, we would shoot him down straight away.
(Carry You)
Which band member can drink the rest under the table?
Zach: I dont know. None of us are really
Rick: If it came down to it, I bet Zack would be the last man standing.
Zach: None of us are really heavy drinkers.
Rick: We are lightweights!
(Electable)
Do you have any vices?
Zach: I love Cheesits. They are crackers which we have in the States. Its a small, square cheese cracker. Theyre really good.
Rick: I spend way too much time looking at bicycle parts on line.
(Gotta Be Somebodys Blues)
What makes you sad?
Zach: I think being away from home; I have a wife and daughter.
Rick: For sure, being away form family for a long stretch of time.
(Feeling Lucky)
I cant really ask you this to married men; does being in a band really mean you get more girls?
Zach: No, were married.
Rick: Not even before we were married.
(Chase This Light)
Do you guys have other dreams and aspiration beyond the band?
Rick: Beyond the band
I would like to go back to school and just learn. I never really had the chance to go to College.
Zach: Yeah, Id like to go back and get a degree that would be cool.
(Fire Fight)
Did you guys know that a large chunk of Camden recently burnt down including celebrity haunt, The Hawley Arms. Is there that kind of scene back where youre from?
Zach: Im sure there are in LA and Hollywood but I wouldnt know.
(Always Be)
The new single is out now.. has it gone down well live?
Rick: Yeah, as far as we can
Boldtell! People have been singing, dancing and having a good time!
What is the most memorable gig that you have been to as an audience member?
Zach: I went to see Shudder To Think and Sunny Day Real Estate. They are two of my favourite bands.
Rick: On our first European tour, Jim and I decided to stay after the tour was over. We hung out in Paris for a few days and we got to see Stereolab and Fugazi. That was incredible. It was sold-out. Someone went in and opened the side door and a bunch of people ran in!
