NME Awards/NME Big Gig
O2 Arena
Thursday 28th February
By Zarina Raja
The NME Big Gig took place on Thursday night at the O2 Arena after the NME awards had taken place at the Indigo Arena earlier that day.
What did you think of the winners? Heres our JD soaked verdict on some awards.
Best British Band Arctic Monkeys
Perhaps this should have been one of the Best British bands but, having said this, out of the nominees; Babyshambles, The Cribs, Klaxons and Muse, the choice was pretty obvious. Three words spring to mind though; (block your ears as we scream) What about Radiohead?
Best Album Klaxons
A mixed bag of nominations for Best Album included Babyshambles, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead and uh, The Enemy. The Enemy? Might as well just cut my ears off and be done with it. Seriously people, how can The Enemy be in the same category as Radiohead?
Best TV Show The Mighty Boosh
God, yeah.
Best International Band The Killers.
Although the weaker of the five nominees (My Chemical Romance being the weakest), The Killers know how to work a crowd in to a writhing mass of craziness, screeching Coming out of my cage and Im doing JUST FINE. It was a surprise that they topped the Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire though.
Best New Band The Enemy
What? Why? How? Who on EARTH?
The nominees for Best New Band included three of the worst bands around today The Enemy, The Wombats and The Pigeon Detectives. Just stick Hard-Fi in there and youve got yourself the Shittest Band Ever category.
Oh no, there are more at least NME readers had it spot on this time with worst band nominees including The Hoosiers (who won!) Panic at the Disco, 30 Seconds to Mars, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy.
It was a surprise to see Britney Spears winning the worst album of the year award over The Hoosiers, Mika and Leona Lewis. But again, nominees couldnt have been any more obvious, Britney aside of course.
Hero of the year Pete Doherty.
Not sure why, but yeah, why the hell not?
Arriving a little late to the NME Big Gig meant that I missed the first three bands, Klaxons, Bloc Party and The Cribs. Thats OK though; the Kaiser Chiefs warmed me up nicely with an enthusiastic set of spluttering Indie tracks that had absolutely everyone in the venue humming along to Ruby, if not throwing themselves around in circles and punching one another in excitement. It was exciting I can tell you.
Last but by no means least, came the Manic Street Preachers who won the Godlike Geniuses Award .
Nicky Wire seemed incredibly excited by the whole thing, bringing along the first NME edition that the band featured on.
With Richey James absence still very much an open wound, the Manics played a heated set that validated the award they received earlier in the night.
As a once raw and beautifully charged Punk turned crashing Rock band, the Manics still have what it takes to shake their fans into a fine frenzy. Although their current stuff is less jarring and a little more generic, The Manic Street Preachers certainly deserved this award for their revolutionary style and urgent, political lyrics.

Jeez, talk about a celebration of mediocrity.
So out of touch with the real world its become irrelevant.
