Operator Please
Supporting The Ting Tings
Club NME, Koko
1st March 2008
Is it just me or are gigs kicking off much later than they used to? By the time Aria award nominated Operator Please hit the stage it was 11.40pm. All the more time to get well oiled with my dears (and they did). Eyes bulged, beer flowed and the North London mosh pit pulsated before the bouncy five-some even hit the stage. The majority of the crowd wasnt familiar with the Gold Coast band but the next thirty minutes ensured they wouldnt forget them in a hurry. Vocalist and guitarist Amandah Wilkinson unleashed a barrage of frantic Pop Rock, while drums, keyboards, bass and violins backed up gems from their album Yes Yes Vindictive.
Wilkinson seems to be a woman of very few words but idle chit chat isn't required when the tunes are hot enough to roast a hog. NME crowds are hard enough to impress at the best of times. This tight little outfit had them begging for more.
Lyrically, Just a Song About Ping Pong is no heavyweight, but the powerful delivery and raucous reception sealed this young bands reputation as one of the most fun and promising out there. The crowd and their (not-so-sculpted-anymore) side-fringes sure seemed to agree. This band will make you proud to be an Australian; If not you'll want to emigrate.
VERDICT: Operator Please may have provided support but The Ting Tings sure had a tough act to follow. Support slots will soon be a thing of the past for this lot. Forget sport, the Aussies have once again hit the Brit where it hurts.
'Get What You Want' single release out this week.
