Gnarls Barkley
Run
Review by Jamie Stangroom
How do you follow up a Grammy winning hit that became the first single ever to go number 1 on downloads alone?
Many would crumble under the pressure, whilst some wouldnt bother at all, content with a life of sand, sea and sun. But thats not for Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo, AKA Gnarls Barkley. No, the chart topping duo intend to return even bigger and better than before, a bit like Super Shredder in that second Turtles movie, he came back really big. So perhaps theyve taken advice from Master Splinter because in its first fat beat Run sounds like it aint bad at all. However, Ive never trusted a rat myself so I think we need to delve a bit deeper into the first single from forthcoming album The Odd Couple.
Before we do can I just say that if this title is a kind of self-indulgent tip of the hat to the members of Gnarls Barkley then its genius, absolute genius, just one glance at the pair will tell you that they really are. Rats and their opinions aside, this single is an upbeat and fun, hip hop infused party song that gives us a real idea of what the new album it kicks starts might finally be like.
The album is actually being rushed released, nestling onto a shop shelf near you on the 31st March, a whole week before its original release, but why the rush I hear you ask? Well in reality probably to avoid internet piracy or something, but the band claim that the timing just felt right, and to be fair it just might be, if the sound of Run is anything to go by then it could just be the refreshing shake up that the charts needs right now. However sup deeply Gnarls Barkley; as chart success can be snatched from you by the most unlikely of sources, such as the conquering it suffered to a deranged frog and much like when Super Shredder was defeated by a group of stoned turtles, Cowabunga
