Martine Topley Bird
The Blue God: Idependiente
Review by Peter Coulston
This is not technically an album review as the whole album is not yet available and is not released until 12 May. I have obtained access to a promo preview which contains Poison from the album along with two other mixes of the song, both of which are available now. Martina has solid music credentials already, with one album, Quixotic to her name as well as collaborations with Tricky and Gorillaz among others. She was a great success on Later With Jools Holland and has been a Mercury Music award nominee in 2004 for her futuristic pop excursions. The album is produced by Danger Mouse and the album track is a mix of fifties R&B and sixties psychedelic pop. The Van She mix is funky with some cello like synths driving the melody, while The Officers mix is darker and rockier with a bass driven back beat. Check out the remixes on their MySpace and I think it will make you want to check out the album in May.
