DEBATE: Madonna - Part Two

maddie.jpgMadonna

Make sure you read Part One of our Madonna debate where Chris Todd lays into Madonna with as much gusto as ever. Can Madonna make it out of such a blasting? Read on to see how Zarina Raja fought her corner

'Madonna is still rocking the charts. She looks hotter than the likes of fellow musicians, such as Girls Aloud, who are at least twenty five years her junior.'

Madonna is a style icon. Madonna is a musical chameleon. She may not be a ‘genius’ but she has used the cards that her career has dealt her very wisely.

Let’s ignore Madonna’s private life; her marriage with Guy Ritchie and her children have nothing to do with her career - which is, is it not, the matter in question?

The secret of Madonna’s success? Talent, fierce determination and a rampant hunger for fame. It is quite easy to mock Pete Doherty and call him a talent less t*** but in regards to Madonna, no-one has a leg to stand on. She has been making hits since the 80s, she looks incredible for her age, and she has inspired – not hundreds or thousands of women – but millions.

Admittedly, in my opinion, Madonna has declined since her heyday. But, to be fair, if she was still making ‘Like a Virgin’ sounding records, it would be boring and very old. She is still so obviously the Queen of Pop. She knows exactly how to work a crowd into a frenzy, put on a fine performance and sell thousands of records.

If people like Pharrell Williams, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake want to be work with Madonna, then how can her continuing popularity be denied? Surely, it is evidence of her vast popularity amongst fans and artists.

In fact, the more that this debate goes on, I see absolutely no point in Chris Todd's accusations. Madonna is still rocking the charts. She looks hotter than the likes of fellow musicians, Girls Aloud, who are at least twenty five years her junior. Early tracks like Borderline, Like a Prayer, Like a Virgin, Holiday, Into the Groove, Papa Don’t Preach, Express Yourself, Vogue and Justify My Love are undeniable anthems. So, what the f*** are you talking about?

How can the jump from Something to Remember to Ray of Light be condemned? Madonna, refusing to stay static, tore herself away from the Pop image she had procured and flirted with a slightly darker, more spiritual, sounding music.

Shortly after Ray of Light, she made Beautiful Stranger, a brilliantly accessible Pop tune that had the likes of Mike Myers (and many others) sweating in his velvet suit.

Music and American Life followed on from this; two albums of less ferocity and innovation than her early stuff, but still owning some huge Pop hits. Confessions on the Dance Floor delved into the world of Electro-Pop and included some very danceable tunes.

Hard Candy, Madonna’s new album, is a s*** name - resembling something Hed Kandi-esque - and the cover is pretty abysmal, but I am yet to hear the content. I am positive that, although the album looks like a it could contain some horrendous plastic Pop songs, it won’t. Why? Because Madonna is an icon. She’s cool, gifted and knows how to roll with the times.

Although Madonna in bondage gear is definitely something of the past, you’ve got to admit – no matter how wrong you think it is – that she looks hot.

And yes, if I look that good at fifty, I will be flaunting it.

I've listened and taken your comments in and still conclude that she's crap, sorry!

Zarina has points. If you hate Madonna coming back, then too bad; She's here to stay. The only thing that will stop her from working is her health, and everyone knows how healthy this woman is. She's made history and such an impact in this world. The only thing you care about Chris is that Madonna is too old and needs to retire. She's doing us all a favour and showing us what a TRUE artist is supposed to be doing; experimenting with different producers and taking risks; not just staying wit hwhat you know is safe. You may never get the meaning and purpose of Madonna's career, only people who have respect for her will.

Another point to mention, her 2006 world-wide Confessions Tour went down as the highest-selling tour for a female artist in history... Madonna's image is, and always has been, extremely provocative (the Sex book, American Life, hanging from a cross in the Confessions Tour,) and that's something that she's about... making people turn their heads and say "what the f***." I think that, as un-sexy as the Hard Candy cover is, that's another one of those classic Madonna "WTF" stunts.
