GIG REVIEW: Be Your Own Pet

Be Your Own Pet
Scala, April 1st

Review by Joanne Conlon

Jemima Pearl isn’t the most predictable of front women. Last time we crossed paths the set was cut prematurely as she stormed offstage in retaliation to a group of overexcited schoolboys. Her reputation for such tantrums has led BYOP’s set lists to be as erratic as their singer, ranging from anything between five and fifty minutes – depending on her mood of course. Add to that a couple of recent mediocre gig and album reviews and I’m almost concerned. But for tonight I head to Scala with an open mind, eager to hear latest album grower Get Awkward live, and hopeful of catching some of that youthful, punky spark that enveloped their debut release.

The riotous teens from Tennessee literally burst onto the stage and before I have a chance to balance on the ledge I’ve found and check out the band’s latest addition – drummer, John – they’ve stormed into their opener while Jemima shakes and shimmys her limbs until they look dangerously close to falling off! With all the energy you’d expect from an adolescent, hotly sought-after band in their prime, BYOP instantly diminish my doubts as they pound from thunderous new tracks Heart Throb and The Kelly Affair to debut favourites Wildcat and Bicycle Bicycle, you are my Bicycle.

With plenty more gems from their relatively small but lethal back catalogue the show surpasses my expectations, banishing our frosty past encounter as well as the negative press. Becky from the new album gets a rapturous reception with its grunge-pop, loco-motion-esque melodies, along with Damn damn leash from their debut EP. After thrashing out latest release Super Soaked and being teased from the stage door, the night ends with an encore of Bunk Trunk Skunk – aptly capturing the aggressive, fun and rebellious side of BYOP that made them so exciting in the first place.

Jemima is clearly a drama queen who thrives in the limelight and luckily for us, tonight she was in the mood to party. Predictable they mightn’t be, but if hit and miss is what it comes down to with Be Your Own Pet, it might just be worth the gamble.
