GIG REVIEW: Sia

"I’d like to have sex with her - it was great!"

This comment made by a young girl at the end of Sia's concert was a bold statement, but said it all really. Surely the post-gig desire to rub bits with a frontwoman is the sign of a truly fine performance.

Have I missed something? It seems strange I hadn’t heard of Sia Furler until last week. After all, we both come from Adelaide (hardly a mammoth place). I’m obviously in the mis-informed minority; after all, the blonde Australian songstress sold out her recent Koko gig. The fans crammed into the venue were a mixed bunch; young, old, gay, straight, Australian, English – you name it. Free booze flowed for industry people on the top level, but the real fun was had by the swaying mass with a close up view. The lass shot to international fame when ‘Breathe Me’ was featured on US television series ‘Six Feet Under’. My real education however, came when the pretty young thing opened her mouth. I can't speak for the rest of the audience but for me, she charmed more for her mid-tune banter than during the songs themselves. You see, Sia keeps it simple. There's no glitz, no glamour, just raw tunes and honest, endearing chatter. Every single person in the venue felt like Sia's best mate. She shared stories of first kisses, sex with cantaloupes and the ups and downs of her eventful career. The lady has worked with Zero 7, Jamiroquai and Massive Attack - it's no wonder she's got enough stories to fill Koko's glorious walls.

The band stood amongst a sea of old stuffed toys and large neon flowers, and pumped the venue with magic. Tunes from her new album ’Some People Have Real Problems’ featured heavily with 'Breathe Me' the predictable stand-out moment. Hell, I've never seen the TV show and even I shed a few wet ones. If only I wasn't sinking wine in the venue's heavens... I'd have reached out to give the girl a hug. The crowd obviously agreed; mates wrapped arms around each other - alone as their individual memories washed over them whilst simutaneously united under a blanket of music.

Adelaide, stand proud.
