Portishead
Machine Gun
Review by Zarina Raja
Portishead have certainly not disappointed the masses with their new single, Machine Gun. They havent released anything since Roseland NYC Live in 98 which means that new material from Portishead is gold dust to dedicated fans.
Machine Gun, the first release off of their new album Third, is, as expected, gloriously dark. A menacing gun-shot sound repeatedly bangs throughout the entire song as Beth Gibbons' jarring vocals weave through the song.
About halfway through, Beth disappears from the track, making way for a few instrumental minutes of sheer shot blasting, mirroring a scene on a battle field. Something resembling a siren begins to wail as you, the hungry listener, tumbles into a sinister world.
Still devoid of Gibbons vocals, Machine Gun reaches a creepy crescendo that could be something off an early Kraftwerk track. A high-pitched electronic vibe takes over, flooding Machine Gun with an eerie and almost supernatural air.
Machine Gun leaves you with no place to hide. It immediately grasps you and clutches on to you with icy fingers. It is the type of song that makes you feel lonely but in a good way. It manages to wipe out the existence of others, making you feel like you are the only person in the world.
