GIG REVIEW: Metronomy

Review by Dedee W

My first visit to the O2 was an eye opener. It’s all a bit shiny and new to me, and a formal venue for a Friday night out courtesy of the people at Eat Your Own Ears. Not that I’m complaining, I could get used to this, the seats upstairs are quite comfy. Early on, Prinzhorn Dance School sounded promising, they probably should’ve put them on later. When I came back and sat down for Junior Boys I couldn’t help but wonder how there’s such a crowd of fans, they sound slightly lame and bland to me, but I got a lot of laughs watching some guy who was doing great ‘Dad dancing’ down the front. Very cheesy indeed, but he was loving it, and for me it provided the main entertainment for most of their set..

But I was there for the headliners and they were brilliant.

Watching Metronomy in full flight is a truly beautiful thing. Picture for yourself that special moment when during Oscar’s winding meloldica lines, Joseph and Gabriel spin on the spot and raise their hands like scary ghosts(!), or even better, do graceful slow motion twirls with guitars held up high.
It works, but it works especially well cos the silly dance moves are just the icing on a very tasty cake. These are some solid electro tunes you can really get your teeth into.

metronomy2.gifMany worthy music fans will already know them, (their well known single ‘You Could Easily Have Me’ came out in 2006) but it’d been a while since I’d seen them so I am especially stoked to be here. It was so good to hear ‘Radio Ladio’ again and watch them punching the air in time for each letter as they chanted it out.

By this time, I had no choice but to run back down the stairs and join the crowd for a better look at the band with their trademark lights stuck to their chests.

They end of course, with ‘You Could Easily Have Me’ still a firm winner on the dancefloor. Crazy glitchy synth lines and that dark swaggering guitar riff make for a lethal combination, and it sounds as fresh as the day they first cracked it open that summer. Fans of original electro noise unite, you can’t go wrong with this lot.

They’ve got a knack for for complex tunes and stupid moves that urge you to get up and dance.
