Very Be Careful
Cargo Bar, Shoreditch, Wednesday 30 April 2008

Review by Tim Kernutt

Initially I was petrified attending the performance by the band hailing from Colombia, "Be Very Careful", until I realised that I had misplaced a word when writing down the details for the night and that the band was in fact called "Very Be Careful".

However, I still stepped into the Cargo bar in Shoreditch with caution, which was very soon thrown to the wind as I caught the infectious vibe of the night. A dance floor hasn't been treated with such disrespect for as long as I can remember, and the crowd - who defined the expression "from all walks of life" - were dancing with the elegance of a chicken which has just lost its head. There was enough energy on that dance floor for BP to assess its recent decision to ends it investment in renewable energy.

The band, featuring an accordion, a bajo, a guacharacha, a campana and a caja vallenata, played a spicy collection of tunes which would have made any accordion-toting, Vallenatan quintet from Colombia proud. It could well be that Colombia may soon be famous for more than one thing!

The pick of the songs for the night from "Very Be Careful" was undoubtedly their cover of Carlos Vive's "Fidelina". But all of their tunes have the capability of enlivening even the dullest of crowds.

By the end of the night, I realised that I had learnt a number of things. Firstly, that my grasp of the Spanish language would be described as being poor by even the most enthusiastic and positive soul. Yes, it really is that bad, and I struggled to decipher any of the Spanish lyrics. And secondly that the talented "Very Be Careful", who will be supporting the Buena Vista Social Club later this week at the Hammersmith Apollo, is headed places (and I'm not talking Bogota).
