If you are involved in the music industry, you'll know that sound checks rarely finish on schedule. It was for this reason, our Great Escape Festival interview with Canadian band Born Ruffians was cut short (and was conducted on top of a log). You don't get that every day.
The lads were in the UK to promote their new album 'Red, Yellow & Blue' and blew the crowd away with a smashing set. All they need now is a decent tour bus.
Thank you for joining me here at The Great Escape 2008. Is it your first time in Brighton right? What do you think?
Yeah, we like it. I don’t want to insult London, but it’s like a really pretty London.
Is it the first time you have ever seen a beach with pebbles on it?
Yeah, I think so, weird. We have sand beaches in Canada, although in Victoria, there is a rock beach.
You’re touring the UK and Europe. Is there any particular place that you are looking forward to?
We are really looking forward to Ireland.
Oh, they are great fun down there. They sink the pints quicker than most…where else are you playing?
Germany, France…
Then back to Canada I believe?
Yeah, well, we are just going to have some time off in the summer. We are back to Canada on June 12th.
How do you chill out in your down time?
Uh, I do a lot of reading, and gardening, handy work, not showering, hibernating…
Is there a Born Ruffian's tour bus out there?
I wish we could show you how we are travelling right now. It is the furthest thing from a bus.
An automobile? Is it a big one?
I can hold it in my hand.
If money was no objection, how would you ‘pimp’ your tour bus?
Uh, with various… nice pictures….
Nice pictures?
Oil paintings, carpet, and lots of hos. Because we are pimping… c’mon!
The single was out in the UK on the 12th and the album is out on the 27th May. Is there going to be a hooting-tooting-hollering party?
I think so. I hope so.
We heard your sound check…
…and it was hooting and tooting?
What can the fans expect from tonight?
More hooting. Not so much tooting though.
You’ve been on Skins haven’t you? Has the fan mail started rolling in since then?
Funnily enough, we just had a super fan roll up to our sound check. She saw us on Skins…well, probably…I don’t know if she did.
What does one have to do to be a super fan?
Wear a cape.
What is the most memorable gig that you have ever been to as an audience member?
Oh, as an audience member? Our most memorable gig was probably two nights ago. We were in Manchester and there was huge football riot. But we weren’t audience members.
English football fans can be a bit ferocious.
Yeah. It was Scotland versus Russia. A few screens broke down and there was rioting and stuff.
Battles was the most recent favourite gig. The Flaming Lips too.
…Oh Yeah!
We played this festival and they had the two main stages, and a tower thing where you could walk up the stairs and look down. Their show had all these giant yellow balls that were huge. They were bouncing all over the crowd. Watching it from the tower was incredible.
