Living Legends
The Gathering
Review By Chris Carruthers
The consistently high standard impressively maintained by Living Legends is apparent throughout this 7 track EP. The lyrics and rhymes are well thought out,
imaginative and unique, complimented entirely by their professional, mastered delivery. Each of the artists features on every track, and they all maintain the highest calibre.
The melodies and beats are intelligent, taking influences from Jazz, Blues riffs and with brass samples and an array other instrumental elements featuring heavily and work seamlessly in every track, notably title track; The Gathering, being particularly catchy. It might just be me but there's real U.K. influences going on with these beats. The clap snares and chilled pads take me back to Tribe Called Quest and bear similarities to the Roots Manuva vibes. Of course, this is a good thing. A tried and tested style, one that leaves bare the tracks elements for scrutiny and with confidence; these guys know what they're doing.
As a listener you become involved, the variety of rappers and relaxed
freestyle feel to the well produced vocal tracks gives the impression they perfected their methods long ago and almost just happened to stumble into the studio (admittedly with clued up producers).
Living legends is one of those unique acts that not only has managed to remain completely true to its roots and maintain a modesty through massive success (1.8m myspace hits) but actually relies on this genuine, straight-up ethos and honesty to do justice to the talented rappers and lyricists involved.
