Miranda Barber
Lips Decision
Review by Peter Coulston
Hopefully, all of you have just read my current Last Week In London column and have rapidly moved in frenzied anticipation to this album review based on my observations at the album launch last Wednesday. For those of you who do not have a clue what I am talking about, finish reading this review and then go and find Last Week In London. As for the album, it has been eagerly awaited and is everything that I hoped it would be. Having been a keen follower of Miranda for some time, I am glad to say that it is all about Miranda and her music; no gimmicks and no overstated production. Miranda can be serious, jazzy, cheeky, raunchy even; but always classy, as this album illustrates. It begins simply with a double bass intro to Num Num Song, a jazzy little piece with some fun voice trumpet. Sweethearts Embrace is an ode to the less fortunate with sparing use of strings and Eliza sees Miranda getting a bit Fifties doo wop, which just shows you that she never fails to surprise. When it comes to serious melodies and lyrics reinforced by impeccable vocals My Tomorrow has the great vocal finale and perfect hooks, and My Roof Has Got a Hole In It keeps it simple but compelling. Theres a hint of blues on A Thousand Seas along with restrained strings and Hammond while Blues Day says it all with the horns kept firmly in their place. Bad Man is hook driven and torchy, another of Mirandas skills, and Show Me Yours and Paprika Haze are naughty but nice; its jazzy, but lets have some fun. The album is all about Mirandas voice, piano and songs; and not in any particular order. Regular contributors are Davide Mantovani on bass, Roy Dobbs on Drums and Sian Latimer on backing vocals. It was produced by Charlie Winston and recorded at Goldtop Studios in London and is a truly excellent debut album.

Have also been a fan for some time and was at last week's album launch. Only one thing to say - truly awesome talent - buy the album, open some wine and get taken on an amazing journey of smoky, bluesy jazz driven by Miranda's velvety sensual voice.
