GIG REVIEW: Jonathan Davis

Jonathan Davis

Review By Holly Groom

The Union Chapel, Islington, promised that Jonathan Davis' solo show would be 'something completely different' from his recent tour with angst ridden rock band KORN. As gothic hordes swarmed to the restored Victorian church to pay homage to their kilt wearing, nu-metal leader, I concluded that the Union Chapel was wrong - this kind of to-the-death rock worship rarely changes much.

The musical differences between the KORN back catalogue and Davis' solo project are minimal. While Davis' backing band included the unexpected edition of a double bass and an electric violin, the songs were essentially the same. He still shrieks and screams his anguished lyrics like a toddler throwing a fit in sweetie shop but, sadly, he doesn't combine it with the demonic, leaping Scotsman routine anymore. Instead he sits, tiny frame enveloped in an enormous red velvet throne (not entirely unlike like those used for the Beckham nuptials) with one foot tucked neatly under his bottom as he tosses his black mane about his shoulders with practiced abandon. He looked chubby and old, wearing a sensible, pinstripe suit and a highly incongruous pair of Nike Blazers. Pretty disappointing for the man who terrified parents across the country with angst ridden classics like 'Freak on a Leash' and 'Make Me Bad.'

The ever eccentric KORN fan base didn't disappoint though and secretly they were all I was there to see. Black lipstick was streaked across translucent white skin as the creak of pvc trousers echoed up around the rafters. Vivien and Mickey - two hardcore goth girls dressed entirely in black fishnet - had driven down from Yorkshire to see the show and told me that they were going to cry when Jonathan appeared on stage. I couldn't see them from my gloomy pew at the back of the church but I have no doubt that they kept their word. Somehow Davis - and KORN - still command endlessly enduring loyalty from their fans. Having sold 30 million albums since the early nineties, it seems unlikely that Davis' solo project will flop - even if he is now just a freak sitting on a giant armchair without a leash in sight.

I TOTALLY don't agree with the above article. I attended the show and while I understand it may not have had as much 'leaping about' as in a usual KORN show, it was everything I expected it to be! Tonight was not really a night for moshing. It was a time for worship - to Jonathan for his courage to do this project in the first place and above all -MUSIC! Every note played sent shivers all over me and my friends. The 2 artists that warmed the crowd up (Miles Mosley and Sharka ...something..) were AMAZING! Really unique!! I can understand why Jonathan likes to work witht hem. On Jonathan, the man is a true musical genious. His voice and music was SERIOUSLY haunting and beautiful and at times WILD! What was excellent to see is how passionate he is about it all. Not being able to sit still. That's just my two cents anyway about one night I'll NEVER FORGET!! Beautiful!!!

This isnt even a review. Its a bunch of personal attacks. There is a good amount of Korn fans that dont like his solo show so it doesnt matter that you didnt like it but atleast talk about the music. You spent more time insulting Jonthan Davis and fans than actually doing your job and reviewing the show. Its like this review was written by a thirteen year old who hates Korn.

Sigh here we go again with the dark evil Korn/ JD stuff. It is apparent from your ranting that you are completely clueless. It is clear that you were biased against this show before it even started. Yes JD and SFA’s used many Korn songs. However, the songs were completely different that when Korn plays them. They sound nothing alike except the lyrics are the same. Anyone who is not deaf can tell the difference. Also, if you did your research you would know that JD started this solo project so that he would be able to play the Queen of the Damned and rare Korn songs live hence the reason for using Korn songs. He is currently in the process of creating a solo album that will ensure that he has a wider variety of original songs to play for the next solo tour. Ok so first you say he has a tiny frame then you go onto say he’s cubby. I’m confused which one is it? I find it funny that you can even consider yourself a journalist considering how poorly this article was written. I can understand you not liking the music since music is subjective. Not everyone will like the same music but to personally attack the musician just because you don’t like the music is ridiculous. I can’t believe you would label a 37 year old man as old. You must be very young. Then you go on to label Korn fans as being dark gothic and eccentric. So I guess it wasn’t enough for you to attack JD you have to attack the fans as well. How stereotypical of you to define a whole class of people based on one show. Then to mock some fans because they are moved by the music is absurd. There are so many people that turn to music to help them through difficult times. Music evokes strong feeling in people who are you to make fun of them just because they love JD’s music so much? There is a reason that Korn continues to “command endlessly enduring loyalty from their fans” but I doubt you would even be able to understand that. I hope for your next review that you are able to stick to commenting on the actual music instead of wasting the whole article on personally attacking the musicians and their fans. On second thought I hope you are never give the opportunity to review a band again since you are clearly an poor and uninformed writer.

That is very interesting how they allow ignorants to write review about shows like this... In first place, this show wasnt for people like you, it was for fans, and was just all about love for music and all the other details were of no matter, especially how JD looked like. So you totally misunderstood the idea of this tour. I can see no point where a KoRn show and AIP show are alike...But you saw a guitar and percussion and thought, yeah, there is no difference. And they play songs from Queen of the Damned on every KoRn show, ohh and Alone I Break too, right, and Last Legal Drug, if you forgot..and Kick The PA sounds EXACTLY THE SAME as on the SPAWN soundtrack. It seems you never been to the KoRn show, otherwise I cannot understand how these two are similar for you.. Now, do you know which of them was Jonathan? because I have some doubts after reading descriptions like first tiny frame and few lines under chubby...you were talking about different people right? As I cannot imagne how can a person be chubby and tiny at the same time...unless he got chubby during 1,5h of the show, but wait, I guess that's not possible either. OHH and Freak On A Leash and Make Me Bad...what a bad songs...You all judging by what you have heard around not even making a background and field research...and you think you can ever understand our love for this band? you know nothing about us, and what we feel listening to KoRn.. I can understand you dont like, you dont have to...but at least if you write about something show that you have some knowlege about the subject you write on and if you write review try to concentrate on describing the show and not attacks or judging fans and their band, or leader of this band...in the review you write about songs that were played and about the general atmosphere, than u can say if you like it or not, but your opinion was the biggest...well the only part of this so called review..sad and you missed the most important parts..

Wow, I hope your career ends soon. What kind of a review is this? AIP is not a flop, as JD and SFA have already toured the US and Europe.

Holly. Seriously? Jonathan Davis is a tiny framed chubby man to you? Did you even bother to look at from from a distance, say more than 200 yards away? I've met Jonathan and he is neither chubby OR tiny-framed. You obviously have no idea of the talent that was on that stage. Each of the back-up band has an amazing resume and if you had done your homework, you could have provided your readers some interesting information. Let me do your job for you online readers who may catch this: Miles Mosley - Amazing stand up bass player. He is considered one of the best in the business. He knows his stuff. You don't get to see jazz integrate into this style of music too often and he makes it look SOOOO easy. Shane Gibson - Classically trained guitarist who graduated from Berkley College of Music in Boston, MA. He stepped in and learned the lead guitar parts IN ONE DAY for Korn earlier this year when the lead guitarist had to leave the tour due to a family emergency. You have to be the best to pull that off! Michael Jochum - An amazing drummer who previously toured with Korn in 2006. His style suits this quasi-acoustic set perfectly. He does double-duty playing for Shenkar on this tour as well as Jonathan. Zac Baird - Um, this gentleman help write some of the music for Korn's last album! He's worked with the band for a few years now. He too opens for Shenkar and he knows his stuff!! Shenkar - Shame on you. Shenkar is considered one of the best in the business. A simple Google would have given you a myriad of celebrities he has worked with. He also co-wrote the score to the hit show Heroes. His credentials are stellar. I guess you missed that this guy has a five-octave vocal range. You ask anyone who is a vocal coach how easy that is. What a pity you chose to look at the physical appearance of Jonathan and his fans (poorly I might add) and not the talent that was on that stage. You might have felt a little different about what you witnessed had you done a little homework. tsk, tsk.

I've also met Jonathan and it's definitely true that he is neither chubby nor tiny-framed. He's well over six foot and really quite broad around the shoulders, as I'm sure his beautiful starlet of a wife would agree. He also has a very, very powerful voice with breathtaking range and versatility, who does a lot more with it than simply "scream like a toddler"- really, is that all you have to say? Is that the full breadth and scope of your insight? True, his first solo outing hasn't thrown up much in the way of "new" material, consisting entirely of Korn songs, songs from the Queen of the Damned soundtrack (now several years old), and a couple of covers. But credit where credit is due: the arrangements of the songs are completely different. Besides, he knows as well as anyone else that the only people who will go to see his first solo outing are his existing fans, and they want to hear the old favourites, the established material. As a means of testing the water before the solo album of new material is completed and released, the setlist was great. You write like a disgruntled adolescent, by the way. Ironic, really.

By the way, just to disprove your pidgeon-holing theory regarding Jonathan Davis's audience: I am neither a goth nor depressed and angst-ridden in any way. I'm really quite a happy individual who likes to wear bright colours and prefers pot to prozac. Less stereotyping please.

Ok... Where do I start. Umm... You have no clue what you are talking about obviously. Also notice how no one else seems to agree with you?! Hmm... Maybe that should tell you something. KoRn is not a goth band. Hello? Where have you been? People like you frustrate me immensely! I'm tired of this shi*!!!! JD and the SFA are a great band and defineatly not goth!!! And the way you describe him is completely dishonest and well just plain bull shit! Jonathan Davis is one of the greatest men alive if not THE greatest!!! And personally I feel that he is the hottest man that has ever existed!!! And KoRn is the greatest band!!! You're a disgrace! If you had done any research then you would know how much JD means to the fans and you would also know how he is such a great person! So so what if we fans cry when we see him. He has saved a lot of the fans lives and in turn he says we have saved his life. P.S. your 'review' is very insulting to just about anyone. And this has nothing to do with my love for KoRn and JD but I AM goth! I liked KoRn before I was goth so please don't think that that is where my feeling come from. They come directly from my heart and my love for THE Jonathan Houseman Davis. -JD's GiRl Long live JD =->

You know why you didn't like the show? Because you're an immature piece of shit who wouldn't know real talent if it punched you in the face. Jonathan Davis has more talent in a single strand of hair than you ever will in your whole life. It's people like you that make the world smell like shit; stereotyping low-lives who haven't amounted to anything in life. Then again, you probably haven't had time to do anything great because you sound young and write like fourteen-year-old who probably had a thesaurus handy while coming up with all of this garbage. The only thing you're good at is talking trash, because this is definitely not a review. How do you like being attacked, bitch? I hope no one ever assigns you to write anything ever again.

What a load of rubbish! Were you even at the show??? Because I was, and I definately wasn't surrounded by goths wearing white make-up and black lipstick! Plus - have you ever been to a korn concert?? Because the kron songs that JD played during his solo tour were arranged very differently to the full band versions. You seem to fail to mention anything of worth, instead behaving yourself like a tantrum throwing toddler. For anybody who is interested in what teh show was really like - The amazing musicians that make up the SFA did exactly what it says on the tin. Miles did an excellent job of warming up the audience, and Shenkar (with some help on the drums from Pappi!!) did a few songs too. Jonathan was on top form, and the acoustics and beautiful setting of the venue made for a very magical night. It was what Jonathan planned for it to be - a celebration of true 'musicianship'. Taking music back to where talented people play instruments and sing live - and the result was breathtaking. I suggest the writer of this article buys the DVD when it is released, actually watches the show, and then comes back and writes about it.

Ok we get it, you have something personal against Jonathan. But could you at least be professional enough to do your job?....how was the music? Several paragraphs and only a couple of sentances about the actual music. I've seen the show. Each member of the band has honed their skills to near perfection. Its not about how crazy JD gets, its about the music. KoRn fans knew exactly what to expect at this show, and were not disappointed. It was not a KoRn show. It was an SFA show, and it was fantastic.

were you REALLY there??? as its completely different to the show i watched! JD was outstanding, very strong vocals and he put 100% effort into it. as for the rest of the band, there was no-one who under performed! it was one of the best shows ive ever watched, by the sounds of it, you had already made your mind up about the show BEFORE it even started. you have pre-judged Jonathan, you have taken a personal attack on him too far. the guy put so much effort into this tour and he deserves a better review than this heap of poop. i was there, my partner was there, every single person in that venue cheered and gave a standing ovation. well, that doesnt include you, obviosly. you are stereo-typing KoRn fans and rock/metal fans by your statement made towards us. i was sitting next to a woman in her 50's wearing a plain blue skirt and a white blouse, she was a big fan. no black make-up, white lipstick or fishnet stockings! i for one wear trainers, jeans and a t-shirt, people in there were wearing normal(if you can call it that) clothing. some were wearing the traditional metal wear of black. so what? doesnt make me or anyone else 'gothic'. if i wore a black pair of jeans, does that make me gothic? i think you'll find you need to open your mind and not judge music by your own standards, which to me is very poor. the concert was 10/10

i dont care that he wore nike blazers, i dont care that he wore a pinstrip suit, i dont care that he looked old and chubby to you, i dont care that the fans looked "goth" to you...write a review about the music played and the type of reaction it got. You're not the first journalist that i have disagreed with on the way the music/concert was covered. Being in the media business myself, whenever I cover something I try to listening to what others have to say about the thing im covering and the overall reaction I get from the atmosphere of the place. It really doesn't matter what you have to say about it. Maybe at the end of the article you could rate what you thought of the show or whatever it is, but try to write about what you observed and what you heard from others who actually paid to see the event and who are fans.

i forgot to add, i feel a pitty for you because you apparently dont know how it is to fell the music, how it is to give yourself fully into music... for you it seems so crazy when JD gives liek 200% of himself to his music and how we fans feel it and give ourself too. And did Jonathan do something to you or what? why are you hating so much on a man you dont even know and probably see first time in your life. Really lady, first learn how to write a proper review, everybody can write a blog, as this is what it is..a blog...how do you get this job? this 'review' isnt helpfull at all for a person who hasnt been to the show..one can learn nothing after reading this..

Ok, so it's obvious you're not a fan of Korn, it's obvious you would've preferred to have been assigned to review a show featuring an artist who has a hit single out this week, and you didn't get that so you threw a big temper tantrum and decided you weren't going to have a good time at all. It's typical most young immature kids your age don't really care about music they just care about what's popular. honestly it sounds like you just read some critical reviews of Jonathan from 10 years ago and decided to just rewrite what they said, either that or you just stayed for 1 song then left, and sought out the first fan you could find who was wearing fishnets or makeup so you could claim that's what everyone there was wearing. His solo show is NOTHING like you described. He's an amazing performer and so is the SFA. I know journalists don't have to be musicians or know anything about music to write a review, but it would be nice for once if one of them actually had some talent of their own so they could back up what they're saying. If i had to guess you're an early 20 something girl who spends most of her nights at clubs getting drunk and most, if not all, of your knowledge about the real world and music for that matter comes from what you hear on celebrity gossip shows and trendy music countdown shows, which makes it very easy to understand why you wouldn't be able to write a proper review.

You know what, like always with journalists, you have missed the point! JD wanted to do something different! But not too different to completely disregard all korn fans! What would be the point in changing the korn songs completely? It would just be cheesey! This is classic journalism against something that isnt flavour of the month! I ask you, were you at the recently sold out korn shows? I think not! The very fact that there are so many loyal korn fans out there should show that korn are a big deaL. The thing that bothers me is, surely the only people who are going to properly read this are korn and JD fans, so you can't blame all these fans from attacking this very biased article, that really does not do any justice to the immense unmeasurable talents of one of the most important men in music history and his backup band. I can understand it hte music was shit, sloppy and not played very well, but it wasnt so . . . . WTF!

Congratulations! Your display of complete ignorance and outright stupidity and your lack of professionalism have just absolutely destroyed your credibility as a "journalist." I HIGHLY recommend you do your homework and familiarize yourself with what you review. You know nothing of Korn, their music, or their frontman, Jonathan Davis. You proved that clearly in your so called "review." Your personal attacks were completely unwarranted and unnecessary and were unbelievably exaggerated. Then again that's what people like you do best: lie, exaggerate, and generalize. To get a "journalist" (and I can't use that term loosely enough in regards to you) whom actually gives accurate reviews would be a miracle. Bottom line: KNOW what you're talking about next time.

Were you even at the show? It is true that it would really only appeal to existing fans, but the songs sound completely different to how they did the first time around. Have you listened to any koRn? As for the comment about PVC - I don't think I saw any, or any black lipstick for that matter. Jonathan is not chubby, nor old, and he is certainly not an angst ridden toddler. I have met him several times and he has always been happy and friendly and chatty. From reading this article, it appears to me that you stayed home and wrote what you thought the show would be like. It might be better in future to get your facts right, and watch the show in question before you slam it. If you do that and still hate it, well at least your opinion is informed.

JD sings with more emotion than most other singers out there!! I want to thank Hisser, Em, Htrix, and JD's girl for saying what I was feeling because I believe they did it in a much politer way than I would have. Obviously this girl has not paid attention to the music and doesn't get it anyway. You can not like the music, but review the music not the fans or the musician's appearance! Get a life. Hmm...where to start. Firstly, why are you bashing on Jonathan's clothing? What exactly did that have to do with the music he was performing. He and the SFA are amazing artists and if you had pulled your head out of your ass for five minutes of any song you would have realized that. You are the reason people hate and distrust jounalists. Shut the fuck up with your biased opinions and just give the facts of whatever the story is. Obvioulsy you do not like this type of music personally, so you made an ass out of yourself bashing it. Secondly, why the fuck are you stereotyping a group of fans that are as diverse as the global population itself. I'm closer to dressing and looking like beyonce than a gothic person and have been listening to KoRn since 1998. I'm sure the room was full of a mixture of people that were open-minded enought to enjoy a really amazing show. I hope you get fired from your job or banned from whatever this review was for. You are the epitome of incompentence in the workplace.

In my opinion, I certainly can say that that guy never had been in the show he says. This man appears to be a fashion designer or a body shape reporter. Please don´t let him go to make a music reports. He is very ignorant and he does´n know anythig about korn music, members and of course the music genre he is critizicing. He should be at E entertaintment tv, or cosmopolitan chanel. Ah by the way please, make him do a deep research about this type of music¡¡ thanks

I'm so glad all of you have posted comments just goes to show nobody can mess with "our guys" without getting something back. Jonathan and KoRn have more guts and maturity than you ever will Holly and I hope you don't believe for one moment that your words hurt JD or The SFAs. I'm sure if they even saw your comments they just let them roll off their backs besides they us the loyal fans to defend them.

This is not a review, it's just a load of ignorant, biased crap. Holy groom, you are a brainless, uninformed, childish idiot, who doesn't have a clue on how to write a show's review. It is evident by your lame comments that you have never been to a Korn show, or even listened to their music, or you would have seen the difference between Korn and Alone I Play in a minute. It's also obvious that you don't have an appreciation of music and you wouldn't recognize good music/musicians if they punched you in the face. Please do the world a favor and never again write another "review", we'll all be thankful for that! The SFA as a whole is an amazingly talented band. JD is one of the best musical talents on this earth, he is a great performer, and his shows radiate a wonderful energy that you would never be able to comprehend. Reviews are supposed to be about music and performance, not just adolescent comments on clothes and looks!!! Summary: You suck and JD and the SFA RULE!!!

I cannot believe that you were allowed to publish the above mentioned piece of biased bull shit on the WWW. What kind of review was that? Were you even at the gig? My sister and I went and had an amazing time, JD was on top form and the SFA's are a class act, the talent on that stage was beyond anything you could comprehend, and you had the gall to liken JD's style as a kid throwing a tantrum in a sweetshop - do you know anything about what that man has gone through and how he has channeled his experiences into his music/lyrics?? Have you ever been to a Korn gig, the differences between the two shows are vast and you have to be a retarded deaf/blind hobbit not to see that.
