Santogold
Scala, 3rd June
Review By Kate Spieg
You cant go wrong with Santogold on top volume, but I left the Scala feeling slightly underwhelmed. Her set felt like she was singing along to her own tunes amazing as they are.
Having a band makes a difference, especially when your voice isnt at its best. The DJs, who tried to keep the crowd pumped during the long wait for her to come on, told us how lucky we were that we were getting a show apparently many of her other gigs had been cancelled due to ill health.
Dressed in a baseball cap, shades matching her dancers on either side, and a baggy white jumper with bats flying across it, looked hot though. This is a woman who you feel could wear anything and pull it off.
You want to be taken somewhere a bit higher at the gig, maybe not always to the clouds above but certainly a higher. She cranked out all the classics, opening with L.E.S Artistes, but after a little more than half an hour, when she left with no encore, you got the feeling shed got involved but wasnt really in the mood. This is one powerful woman, I hope she feels better soon.
