Duffy
Shepherd's Bush Empire
4th June 2008
Three things were made certain last night at Shepherd's Bush:
1. Duffy is one of the strongest, most unique voices to emerge on the scene for a very
long time.
2. The music industry should be limited to no more than 20% of any audience.
3. The young lady from Wales is still finding her form.
Duffy sang, danced and gyrated through an hour-long set last night, highlighting her dearth of material as well as her need to diversify. Every song has the Philly-wall-of-sound sound which ends up detracting from her talent as a singer. Add in the free-lunch music industry crowd and you have the recipe for a somnambulant set that deserves to be so much more. I started off blaming the crowd and ended up adding in Duffy's management to the charge of inducing boredom at a live gig. I guess she'll have to take some of the rap as well.
So here's hoping she branches out in her music (I'd love to see her do some Rev. James Cleveland gospel or Bonnie Tyler power ballads) as she grows as an artist. Frankly I'd like to hear and see the best version of her in two to three year's time.
