May7ven
Hands Up
Review By Chris Carruthers
From the outset you know with this upbeat, powerful release from May7ven, there's no messing about; straight up, no frills dancefloor RnB and made to make you move, and which no doubt will still be successful in doing this. With a lively and admittedly catchy melody line in the form of a mario style synth, complimented by a hard hitting urban RnB beat, May7ven's sleek and sexy vocal line sits perfectly in the mix. Then comes the anthemic chorus line, with fat orchestral chords dropping in, the likes of which could be found in Jacko's upbeat tunes. With the advent of long breakdown featuring an electro style synth and a big drop back in, you can't help but think this track was made for club.
A long way from the church choir roots from which her music has grown, May7ven goes from strength to strength, having worked with a list of big names from Blue Cantrell to Wu Tang Clan, Jamelia, KRS and many others. With Hands Up you can see why May7ven has been developing a reputation for stomping club tracks and its a nice twist on the increasingly generic RnB style. Whilst no doubt she will enjoy great success on this release, its not a
long term formula. However, with her unique approach and distinct talent, I for one will be interested to see where it goes.
