ALBUM REVIEW: Brown Punk

Tricky
Brown Punk

Reivew By Chris Carruthers

An instant fusion of Indian whistles in Starving Souls’ Babylon with a jumped up reggae instrumental section, bound by seemingly flawless production forces, opening your mind to what’s to come.

With a real live, jamming vibe and upfront vocals, you’re immediately in anticipation of the following acts. Abruptly the tone is changed by a convincing, yet somewhat generic retro indie piece from The Dirty we’re informed in no uncertain terms that this label operates with broad horizons.

The mix of rock, acoustic, reggae and more, at this standard especially, is a rarity on the commercial market and an admirable move from Brown Punk Execs Tricky and Chris Blackwell. However, while each contributed track maintains a high standard, the constant switch between significantly different genres makes it hard to get into the album as a whole.

The variety of tracks encompasses the lively folk/acoustic vibes of Rodigan and the conversely anthemic drum and bass vibe of 1st Bloods’ Connecting people, this makes the substantial talent of the musicians and producers involved all the more impressive.

Ultimately the feel of this CD is that of a small, grounded organisation doing big things. This is saying something in an industry where the giants rule and the underground is crowded. With the huge credibility and experience offered by Tricky and Chris Blackwell in the birth of this exciting new label, you feel good things are destined from the start. And this is exactly what this album suggests. With a hugely eclectic and substantial variety of artists, there is nothing such as trend or convention determining what genre or fad is pandered to, simply pure talent.

The creation in itself is something of a refreshing, unique concept, one that seems to be attempting to operate outside the boundaries of the industry. This is a down to earth and genuine album featuring a mix of artists, all with great talent and ability, and in way representative of positive progress in all their respective genres.
