Eliza Doolittle - Piano Song
Piano Song
Review By Chris Carruthers
At just nineteen, Eliza obviously is a talented vocalist. You do get the sense that she has yet to fully develop, specifically in terms of creating an individual style. With respectable influences diverse as Gilbert and Sullivan, and Burt Bacharach its little surprise at this early stage it detracts from her individualism.
Competent musicianship, and a well realised ambient/lounge style and unfortunately not much more. There is nothing special about this track, nothing that stands out certainly no unique angle being taken that said it isn't hard on the ears, there's a nice vocal line, an appropriately summery, jazzy vibe but ultimately fairly uninteresting.
Whilst certainly not strong on originality, its all well and good, considered arrangement and tight production from the respected Commissioner Gordon, just simply lacks any kind of excitement and utilizes an age old, and let's be honest; not terribly challenging formula. I feel this isn't entirely a bad thing however, the generic, 'background music' style remains popular and no doubt will find its place in the commercial world. I am open to the possibility of being nicely surprised upon the release of her forthcoming album.
