Nomad Jones
The TV light EP
Review by Andy Hirst
Following a much hyped performance at this years Glastonbury festival, Manchester based singer songwriter Nomad Jones releases his debut EP on the 14th July. Known to his friends as Damon Valentine (a name which he saw as being too cabaret for his musical creations) a recent succession of high profile support slots for the likes of Badly Drawn Boy, Elbow and Fionn Regan have built up quite a reputation for the young singer songwriter. Perhaps this developing reputation lead to the manner by which he has been so careful in biding his time for this release which, despite being only 4 tracks in length, has been recorded across several months in a variety of home studio situations. The care and attention really does shine through in the recordings in a manner not often expected from a debut, the string accompaniments are elegantly layered and join the neat arrangement of gentle guitars at just the right moment, whilst his vocal qualities justify comparisons to such artists as Damien rice and Elliot Smith.
Whilst his well honed musical talents shine throughout this record its downfall might be due totally to factors outside of his own control; a couple of years ago this EP would have been devoured hungrily by eager critics and labels assured that the then current trend of male singer-songwriters would be predominant for ever, but trends never last for long in the music business and whilst James Blunt and Damien Rice continue to churn out album after album of dinner party friendly tracks ad infinitum, the market seems too saturated to let any young pretenders into the loop. To his credit he is probably far more interesting than a good many of those artists especially their later offerings yet whether that will be enough remains to be seen.
