Sarabeth Tucek
Single: Nobody Cares
Review by Naima Khan
For a song about being miserable and alone, this Tucek track is surprisingly cheery. It should have had its UK release in the 80s during Thatcherism. It la-di-das over the No such thing as society issue to proclaim - with a little LSD left over from the 70s - that nobody cares as much as you do - harsh but true? PMS? I suppose it depends what mood you're in. It has a minimalist sound with a 60s feel but a lot less upbeat as though Petula Clark found there actually wasnt much waiting for her downtown.
Tucek has a tuneful Californian voice not unlike that of Deb Talan of The Weepies fame; a Cat Power tinge to the lyrics and a Kimya Dawson-esque tempo. In short, if you liked the Juno soundtrack, youll like this.
Check out her MySpace page where the variety of her sound is showcased. Have a listen to Holy Smoke which has an Aimee Mann-ish feel and some Audioslave-like riffs. My apologies for all the comparisons, her voice lacks distinction but the quality of her song writing undeniable. Supporting probably the most original songwriter and vocalist, Bob Dylan, cant have hurt. Nobody Cares was released June 2nd.
If you find you like Sarabeth Tucek, check out Trespassers William. Their song Lie in the Sound has featured on many a teen drama soundtrack- pause for the tear-jerker montage scene. Their vocalist Anna-Lynne Williams sweet voice will sing you to sleep.
