REVIEW: McFly

McFly at Koko
itunes Live
24th July 2008

Review by Laura Yates

Thursday July 24th at Koko. The venue is filled with a combination of young screaming girls devoted to the four young lads about to grace the stage, their boyfriends who perhaps don’t like to admit they like their music and a good few older mum types who wish they were their sons. Yes, this could only be the McFly itunes live gig.

A devoted fan of Harry, Danny, Dougie and Tom since they stormed into the charts in 2004, I was genuinely excited to be a part of this gig. In appearance the boys have hardly changed at all – perhaps a bit more of a confident swagger, but musically they have certainly surpassed the teeny bop label they have been so long attached to, proving they are strong musicians and songwriters in their own right. Opening with ‘One For the Radio’ which is taken from their latest album Radio:ACTIVE, immediately demonstrated a rockier, tougher sound which will probably appeal to the more adult fans out there.

The set continued with an amalgamation of favourite McFly classics including ‘Obviously’, ‘All About You’ and ‘Room on the Third Floor’ amongst further new tracks. One particular thing which struck me was the immense physical energy on stage. With songs such as ‘Everybody Knows’ with ever so slightly risqué lyrics, the band by the end of the song were struggling to even breathe! I really liked the fact that each band member spoke to the audience between songs with banter that could only come from early twenty something boys. Even Harry on the drums had his moment which is quite unusual in a gig situation. With all the lads enthusiastically stating that "This song sucks and is the worst song ever" in reference to the song 'Transylvania', Dougie the bass player demonstrated clean, rocky vocals, allowing him the opportunity to really give a shining performance. My personal favourite song of the evening was a new song entitled ‘Lies’ and is definitely a slightly edgier, more experimental sound for McFly. This song blew me away and absolutely rocked Koko.

For their encore, the boys could only really perform the song which launched their career ‘Five Colous in Her Hair’. Of course, the crowd went mad. It is difficult to believe that a band who are all still in their early twenties, have experienced success to such an immense degree. There is however, a real sense of genuine gratitude to their fans and despite nearly five years of consistent success, these boys are really very normal and at heart, are like any other lads their age. At the end of the gig, there was unfortunately no stripping off (something they like to do at gigs!), but they did throw their sweat stained towels into the audience along with Harry’s drumsticks and guitar plectrums. Musically, one thing is for sure; McFly indeed have a number of pop classics but their material is consistently getting better, allowing them to prove their value as great musicians, songwriters and vocalists. A fun, musically stimulating and enjoyable gig. McFly definitely still have a place in my heart!
