SINGLE: Things Have Changed
Review by Naima Khan
Things Have Changed is a startlingly chilled fusion of reflective Ragga, sweet vocals and world music undertones.
This could easily become a huge sound track for this summer if it gets the airplay it deserves. It rivals its predecessor, international chart topper Big City Life- the last chart topper put out by Mattafix duo Marlon Roudette and Preetesh Hirji bringing Reggae back to the UK charts this summer while Sean Paul is away. The showcasing of two diverging vocal styles over a heavy base is in no way over-polished but blends flawlessly. Its a smooth, chilled track without being background music. The intro and the base are both catchy and attention grabbing but the balance of varied sound refutes the pop-hook label. Placing female vocals alongside the macho Ragga chorus over strings and a pulsating electro beat may sound risky but it works, they even manage to chuck in a few sly pan pipes during interlude.
Mattafix are far sharper and more distinct with Things Have Changed than they were with Big City Life. Despite the changing vocals, their sound is clearly distinguished. Theyve toured with the likes of Jem and Joss Stone, original vocalists leaving their own fingerprint on the current music scene.
