The Sea
Dont You Want Me
Review By Matt Killeen
The White Stripes have a lot to answer for. I was never a fan, they cant write songs for a start but as time past I came to a grudging respect for Jack Whites guitar playing if nothing else. However, they have perpetrated any number of copycats and the result is usually woeful. Such is the case here.
There are only two members of The Sea and you can tell. Theres a reason why the traditional rock outfit is at least three people its the fewest number of people who can make the requisite frequencies. If you play with two people the odds are that youll sound like two people rather than like a band and certainly end up with what sounds like a demo.
Dont You Want Me is vaguely punky blues rock thats very minimalism is its undoing. Thus exposed, the drumming, vocals, lyrics and guitar are shown to be undistinguished and nowhere near as exciting as they need to be.
Wolfmother do this better and they barely justify their existence. Likewise the Black Keys make a more interesting bass-less noise. If, as their press release suggests, The Sea are only doing this for FUN! (sic) then they shouldnt be taking up valuable room and bothering busy people. The fact that they are influenced by a band that currently exists and that their name belongs to a band less than ten years defunct tells you everything you need to know about their lack of vision.
