SINGLE REVIEW: The Verve

The Verve
‘Love is Noise’
Release 4th August

Review by Matt Killeen

In the early nineties Verve were a terrible band ludicrously over-hyped by the music press and after a while they went away. They clearly did some thinking and some work and out of nowhere in 1997 they produced an album of stunning beauty and resonance. This went to their heads and the band were insufferably, if justifiably, full of themselves until they broke up two years later. Their lead singer went on to make some the worst records ever created, some nasty clichéd, cod-melancholy yet faux-triumphant dirges with titles like ‘Music is Power’.

Surely, now the band is back together, they will inevitably hit the heights again?

No. They will not. Much has been made of how unique and envelope busting this song is but it will only seem unusual if you’ve lived under a rock for a decade. It has one, far from fascinating sample that is used throughout to conceal the lazy and repetitive song structure. The song is melodically non-existent and the adolescent whinging 4th form poetry that they expect us to swallow, as if we have no thoughts in our own heads, is execrable. ‘I was lost, insecure, but the road is long and love is noise and love is pain’. Christ, My nine year old writes better than that. So ludicrously Verve-by-numbers is this song that I keep expecting it to turn out be an elaborate joke and that ‘Love is Noise’ is actually the new single by The Shirehorses or the women from Smack the Pony. Expect future singles to be called ‘Music is Colour’, ‘Love is Music’ and ‘Music is Noise’ and they will all suck.

Do not listen to, download, buy or even think about this track for fear that your brain will slough away in putrid chunks and leave you in a catatonic state, being drip fed liquidised vegetables by Q magazine.

Fag?! Are you kidding?! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as is Matt, as are you. However, I suspect The Verve would rather endure a negative review from time to time than have supposed fans spewing the term 'fag' as an insult in their defence or in their name. Stick to the music mate.
