Kano
140 Grime St
Release date: 29th September

Review by Kaydine Biscette

Far from the cry of Kano’s sophomore album London Town, which was filled with a mixture of commercial tracks, and commercial collaborations, 140 Grime St is on a different level altogether.
Released on the lyrical wordsmith’s own record label, Bigger Picture Music, 140 Grime St brings Kano back to his roots of Grime music.

From the first track entitled 140 Grime St, you can feel the energy within Kano’s voice and lyrics. This energy continues throughout the whole of the album, it’s as if this album was Kano’s sense of release from his former label, 679 Recordings. He speaks his mind, he speaks the truth, and he speaks the streets in 16 tracks.

The Grime street anthem, and first digital single from the album, Hustler, is a definite winner! From the lyrical content about surviving in life, which is universal so everyone can relate to it, together with the gritty baseline and catchy chorus, makes this a great track, regardless of whether you are a fan of Grime or not.

With collaborations from the God-father of Grime, Wiley, long time underground MC Ghetto and the Rolex Sweep king himself, Skepta, this is a Grime lovers paradise…what more could you ask for?

I Stand By It is an interesting track, there’s beat, it’s just Kano stripped down bare, raw and real. This makes the lyrics stand out more and gives the track more meaning….Kano is back!

The simile “I’m back to grime, ‘cause they’ve been missing me like Madeline”, from the track Missing Me, is just a quick reminder about what the whole album is about, Kano going back to his roots. Even though some may argue that this reference to Madeline McCann is inadequate, it really does sum up how much the fans have missed Kano, and how much the Grime scene has missed him too.
