ALBUM REVIEW: Lovebox Weekender 2008

Groove Armada
Lovebox Weekender 2008

Review by Tim Kernutt

Have you ever been to a Groove Armada gig or DJ-set and been as bored as you were when you had to learn the periodic table at school? No, me either. Therefore, fans of Groove Armada will not be surprised that their latest album is devilishly funky. What may surprise the fans, though, is that the double-album, 'Lovebox Weekender', only actually features one Groove Armada tune.

"Lovebox Weekender", in simple terms, is a Groove Armada-DJ compilation. Both CDs feature some of the best acts from the recent London Lovebox Festival, as well as some of the biggest tunes to emanate from Lovebox Ibiza. Tom Findlay's CD is a much smoother and instantly recognisable ride than Andy Cato's darker, dancier and anthem-driven compilation. However, the two CDs together create the perfect dance-compilation.

From N.E.R.D's energetic 'Run to the Sun', to the blissful sounds of Sly & The Family Stone's 'If You Want Me To Stay', and the funk-tastic Frankie Vallie and the Four Season's 'Beggin', there is enough music variety on the first CD to inspire high-octane dancing. Fortunately, the second CD features more of the same and then some, with artists such as MIA, Laidback Luke, and Groove Armada themselves mixed to great effect. The culminating track by Frankie Knuckles, 'Your Love', sums up the compilation with its thumping anthem-like sound.

True, it is becoming increasingly popular for festival organisers to cash in on the post-festival wave of euphoria by producing a 'festival-best-of' album. However, when you have Groove Armada headlining a festival and helping you produce such a CD, it would be rude for a festival organizer not to commission such an album. And just like the fact that Groove Armada has always been at home producing both chill-out and dance anthems, 'Lovebox Weekender' has similar music diversity.
