Neimo
Death Disco
Notting Hill Arts Club, London
3rd September 2008
Review by Laura Yates
Wednesday evening saw me at the trendy Notting Hill night Death Disco (Notting Hill Arts Club) for a set which I believe will remain in my mind for quite some time. I had made the trip over to West London to see Neimo, who I am brave enough to predict are going to be big on the music scene in the not so distant future.
Neimo are all from Paris and released their EP Poison The Chalice in the UK on Monday. The four lads are already creating quite a stir both here and the US and when listening to the transatlantic vocals of front-man Bruno Alexandre, you would actually never know that Neimo are French as there isnt a hint of an accent in addition to the delivery of incredibly English lyrics. In fact, Neimo actually struggled to seek a record label in France to sign them as 40% of music aired on French radio must be sung in French. Aiming to appeal to a bigger audience, Neimo secured a signing to US label Shangri-La records and arent we glad!
What Neimo have brought from Paris however is a real touch of class, charisma in abundance as well as being very easy on the eye. Most importantly however, the pop/rock band provided the audience with a committed performance. It is all well and good to get on stage and simply play and sing call me old fashioned but I want to be entertained. Their music has a great deal of US and British influences and the title track of their EP Poison The Chalice is hypnotically addictive, upbeat and slightly reminiscent of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Other tracks include Hot Girl which makes you want to go revert back those teenage days of dancing around your room with not a care in the world and surely that is what music is all about?
I also think that many lead singers (and aspiring ones) could learn a lot from Neimos frontman Bruno Alexandre who commanded the stage and crowd with an immensely overwhelming presence. Interacting with the audience is a brave thing to attempt and get right but Bruno did it with such conviction (yet in no way intimidating) that I found myself hoping he would come up to me! There wasnt an ounce of self-indulgence however as he also interacted with the other band members and wanted to involve them in the performance as much as possible which worked brilliantly and added to the entertainment factor. He also gave an outstanding vocal performance and his swagger reminded me ever so slightly of a young Mick Jagger which isnt a bad thing!
I am genuinely thrilled that I got to see this band at such a tiny venue when they werent even the headlining act. To be so close to a band with as much talent, charisma, ability and brilliant songs as Neimo, I for one certainly feel privileged.
