The Levellers
27th of September at The Royal Albert Hall
Review by Katherine Cowell
It seemed a strange marrying; that is, a post punk political band playing at the sumptuous Royal Albert Hall, but the acoustics of the world famous venue did their sound justice and it was performance that justified playing in such a space.
The venerable band were joined on stage with 4 violinists which gave the assumption it would be a more sedate affair. Given that theyre the Levellers, this was not the case!
When the familiar riff of No change sounded, the audience response was palatable- and the dancing began to start and didnt stop until the rousing end.
Their famous song Julie received a welcoming response, and the young and old could be found dancing in the stalls and the aisles.. or wherever there was space!
For the Boatman everyone joined in to sing the chorus your hope for tomorrow if to smile anyway and became swept up in the power of the music and the atmosphere.
The acoustics were fantastic, and the sound and passion reverberated around the grand concert hall. The lights were swept across the crowd, and lit up with the band onstage.
The crowd was a mixture of young and old parents with their children, hens parties, young cool kids all united by their love of the Levellers.
They played the entire set sitting down, but they still showed passion and energy and managed to inspire and wow the crowd.
The second act became more rockier, less folky and more political.
They obviously havent lost the passion and vigour that helped them build such a strong fan base in the late 80s and early 90s.
They Ended with One Way and brought the proverbial house down and at this point, everyone was dancing and clapping their hands loving every moment. Despite being around for 20 years, they havent lost their power, rawness or inspiration

Just some info but this is not correct: For the Boatman everyone joined in to sing the chorus ‘your hope for tomorrow if to smile anyway’
This is from the song together all the way!
