Interview by Zarina Raja
Punk-Pop band Farewell of North Carolina will be touching down in the UK in October with a whole host of venues to play and a new single 'Eighty Eights.'
Chirpy, cheeky and colourful, Farewell melt into that bouncy-Pop sounding vibe, covered with teenage melo-dramas and irresistibly (or maybe just irritating) guitars and vocals.
We spoke to Marshall Davies, lead singer of Farewell.
You have a lot of UK dates lined up for October. Have you spent much time in the UK before?
Nope. this is our first time coming over to Europe at all, so we're stoked about the tour. We hardly got out of our state growing up, so these opportunities are priceless.
What are you looking forward to most while you are here?
We have been told that the fans are really cool over there, so we're looking forward to meeting them! We love getting to make that connection with the people we have talked to online for years.
Your sound is quite eclectic if there was one word to describe it, would what it be?
Farewellish.
Do you guys all have different tastes in music?
We all have very diverse musical tastes. We listen to everything from The Get Up Kids to Braid to Protest The Hero. Mostly we listen to the same stuff that we did when we were 15, Green Day and Blink 182. Haha.
At what age did you realise that the musical path was the one that you were going to pursue?
It's still a shock to me that we're doing this as a career now. We never expected to get to the level we're at now, but that makes it that much more exciting. We are very thankful for everything that we have and all of our fans.
You have a huge fan base on your MySpace. Do you control your own MySpace? Do you ever read the messages that fans have left you?
We control the MySpace and read like 98% of the messages we get sent. I would say 100% but I know that it gets tough when we're on tour. All I can promise is that we try really hard to answer all the questions, big to small, so please keep in touch.
What is your favourite song to play live?
My favourite song to play is "First One On The Blog". It has a ton of energy and gets the crowd moving.
Have you ever had any bad gig experiences?
We have had PLENTY of bad gigs. We started off as a pop-punk band in a state that only listened to metal and hardcore. I'd say our first year as a band was mainly BAD gigs, but we stuck through it and converted some metalheads into pop loving fools.
How do you think you have progressed since your debut, Poisoning the Lark, in 2005?
Haha. We have armpit hair now! That EP is so old, I don't even know what to say about it. We have definitely realized what we love to do and have found our "voice". Back then, we had no idea what we were doing, although there is a certain part of that innocence that I miss. Those songs are a lot darker in subject matter, but that's where I was those days. Things are different now.
Where do you see yourself in ten years time still making music?
Definitely! We'll be living like we're 18 when we're 30! That's the beauty of our music. It keeps you young at heart.
Chat to me a bit about Isnt this supposed to be fun?
That record means a lot to us. It is basically a compilation of songs from 2005-2007. When we signed our record deal, we wanted to get our music out as soon as we could, so we released that record. It definitely has something for everyone on it.
Are you still busy promoting this, or are you having new ideas for a new album?
We are always promoting that record, cause there are 13 great songs on it, but we're also focusing on our new material. We are starting to go record record number 2 in January of 09. Be on the lookout. I can't wait to see the world's response.
Do you get sick of each other when you are on tour together? Who is most prone to fight with one another?
Hahaha. We definitely get tired of each other. ANYONE who lives in a van with 5 of their friends will end up angry with them at some point. We have learned how to deal with each other, so it's definitely not that bad. Buddy is definitely the fighter in our band. We have never had any problems with getting beat up cause he has trained us well.
Did you have any other aspirations asides from music?
I have a design company called Zamn! Design. I do merchandise designs for bands all over the world. When we aren't on tour, that's my full-time job.
Do you guys prefer being on tour or in the studio?
I like both, but since we've been on tour for the past year...I'm even MORE excited to hit the studio. Recording is so much fun. Id love to do it every six months if we could.
What is the most memorable gig that you have been to as a fan?
My favourite show ever was seeing Green Day, Weezer and Nerf Herder on the Insomniac/Pinkerton tour. Hands down the best show of my life so far. I have also seen Alkaline Trio like 25 times, so yeah. I'm a super-fan.
