Gym Class Heroes
The Quilt
Review by Chris Carruthers
Whilst there isn't necessarily anything (beat/lyrics/production) to distinguish tracks such as Cookie Jar from so many like it, I'll admit my toes are tapping, and there is definitely a high quality in the production which suggests a huge amount of consideration.
The more you listen, the more you want to hear, and crossing seamlessly between Reggae, Hip Hop and Rock, your're continuously, and pleasantly surprised.
In fact, it's the genuine flavour and lack of arrogance that actually endears me to these guys; you get the feeling they made it on pure talent and love for doing what they've come to do so well.
Certainly a distinguishing factor is the inspiration they've found from real life, outside of cars and bitches that similar, devoid artists enjoy so much success from. You get the feeling that childhood friends McCoy and McGinley take their time perfecting the music and the beats, where others may just 'settle' for what theyve got.
Despite very credible rapping and lyrics, the music remains the central core. Its no wonder the Gym Class Heros are enjoying great success, you feel it is well earned, and rewarded; with collaborations with big players such as Busta Rhymes on one of my favourite, Reggae tinged beats - Peace Sign/Index Down.
