Andrea McEwan
Candle in a Chatroom
Release date: October 13th
Review by Beca Laliberte
October 13th sees the release of McEwans debut single 'Candle In A Chatroom' and with a sound that is so similar to that of Katie Melua and Norah Jones, McEwan is not making much of an effort to offer anything new or remotely intriguing.
Candle in a Chatroom is the album opener and is a pretty but dull ballad where McEwan makes a poor attempt at a social comment on internet-based relationships.
The structure of the song is horrendously predictable (except for the nice coda which is then ruined by the endless repetition of the you cant light a candle in a chatroom doo-da) and whats worse, is that the song doesnt have an ounce of soul or emotion. This mechanical singing seeps into the next track Black Socks in the Wash where again, there is a horrible attempt at some kind of quirky simile (Lovers disappearing, like black socks in the wash). Underpinned by a jazzy jive of a bass and a guitar, McEwans singing seems strangely forced and calculated throughout.
Fast Train, the third and final track, is a piano driven ballad that also has so much potential to be more than it is. You might feel momentarily moved by McEwans vocals but it isnt long before you tune into the meaningless lyrics that inevitably pollute the entire song. The young Australian singer claims that she started writing songs at the tender age of three. With lyrics like I wanna travel through the night like only a train can and I wish I was a fast, fast train. I have to ask - was Fast Train one of these songs?

What a thoroughly inaccurate article. Congratulations on being wrong in just about everything you say. That's quite a talent.

My wife and I saw Andrea last night with Katie Melua in Glasgow. We were impressed with her take on the dangers, fickleness and loss of intimacy of chatroom relationships.
Perhaps its just Glasgow but her 'Black Socks in the Wash' was also well received.
I think there's a fine line between the role of Reviewer and Critic - unfortunately I don't think you have provided a balanced viewpoint.

I watched Andrea at Cardiff the other night, Wow, this girl sings like an angel to me. The present line up of her band is the best to date. Your review needs agood washing. Best new act this year, really refreshing.
