PNAU
Durrr, The End
6th October 2008
Review by Katherine Cowell
The punters at Drrrr will always expect to be entertained by cool and groundbreaking acts. That is what nights at The End have always given. PNAU was no exception.
Coming on after midnight, the anticipation was rewarded as soon as the opening bars of Wild Strawberries sounded. The crowd was soon singing along and dancing even harder. This heralded a thumping set, which only became heavier and more intense throughout the night.
PNAU was all about frenetic energy and thumping base lines. There wasnt a single person in the room who wasnt moving. The lead singer, Nick Littlemore, arrived on stage looking bohemian cool with a headband and (what could only be described as) a kaftan. By the fourth song hed ripped this off and was wildly dancing round the stage bare-chested and crazed.
The guitarist and back up vocalist was also brilliant, if only for his outfit: tights and an oversized t-shirt. Using a myriad of instruments, PNAU kept the sound fresh and interesting. At one point Nick Littlemore was playing what looked to be a mini saxophone into the microphone and creating an atmospheric sound that layered perfectly into the thumping beat.
The hit tune 'Baby' was played towards the end, and everyone joined in for the catchy chorus; grinning and loving every moment.
PNAU play with an abandonment that is palpable; an energy that becomes fused with the sound and the crowd. It is next to impossible not to feel the music and dance with the same joy.
