The Maybes?
Waterrats London - 30th September.
Review by Charne Jones
Music doesnt have to be thought provoking. No - not when it grabs you by the nerves and shakes you until you vibrate in hedonistic ecstacy from top to toe.
Tonight, all it takes is a short half hour set for The Maybes? to weave themselves into the fabric of the British music industry. They burst onto the stage with the young enthusiasm of a couple of kids in love. But turn the lights down and you might as well be listening to a vinyl.
Nick Ellis, Lee Smith, Timo Tierny, Nick Otaegui and Dominic Allen are raw and energetic with just enough polish to pass themselves off as semi socially acceptable.
If it weren't for their obvious musical know how, they could be just a couple odd looking twenty somethings playing down at the local pub, taking a child-like pleasure in breaking music down to its ABC's.
The Maybes? lyrics' are simple, the melodies catchy and charismatic - but these boys are a modest lot, so don't be fooled. You'll do well to find more talented musicians, as the band plays their instruments with fine and definite precision.
Audiences are already lapping up the singles 'Boys' and 'Talk About You' like the last of the British summer, basking in clever music and clean, cutting edge narrative.
This is the kind of music that starts as an underground whisper and spills over into the charts, knocking down every indie band wanna be on its way up. And really, I would love to lend some kind of social commentary, maybe offer up a shard of tatty advice but, besides a dodgy set of haircuts and some eagerly tailored trouser hems, the Maybes? are close to perfect.
So dig out your clean cotton shirt, hang up your shabby coat and pick me up at six.
'Cause It's time for a dapper night out on the tiles.
